India register convincing victory over Sri Lanka despite absence of key players, race away to the final

The Indian cricket team comprehensively thrashed Sri Lanka in the ODI match played today at Dhaka.

India now have 9 points and are placed second in the tri-nation tournament table with Sri Lanka topping it and Bangladesh at the bottom. The team’s net run rate is now +0.718

Earlier as Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat opener Upul Tharanga got dismissed on the fourth ball of the innings off Sudeep Tyagi. However their in-form opening batsman Dishan was off to a flying start, hitting eight boundaries off his 33 runs.

India got off to a superb start as its most experienced bowler of the pace department Zaheer Khan sent back Dilshan off an edge that went to Gautam Gambhir who was fielding at slips. Zaheer then dismissed Mahela Jayawardane who hit a century in his previous match as the scoreline read 60-3 in the 10 over.

Captain Kumar Sangakkara played a fighting knock and raised himself to 68 runs Yuvraj Singh got him out eventually.

Sri Lanka were 6 wickets down for just 84 runs at one stage. S Randiv scored a half century along with his skipper but Sri Lanka had nothing much to cheer for as the Indian bowlers including Amit Mishra and Zaheer Khan took 3 wickets each and bowled them out for a mere total of 213 runs in 46.1 overs.

With the absence of key players like Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag from the Indian batting line up it was time for young guns like Dinesh Karhik and Virat Kohli to yet again prove their mark. Karthik and Gambhir opened the Indian batting innings and put on 89 runs in just 11.3 overs as Karthik got out falling a couple of runs short off his half century.

As Sri Lankans dropped two easy chances off Gambhir he went on to score 71 runs of 86 balls until he got out to the bowling of Perera.

Virat Kohli who had been impressive with the bat in the last few matches yet again proved his middle order stability. The young man smashed an unbeaten 71 runs off 68 balls as he lead India to an easy victory over the rivals in just 32.4 overs.

With India’s top three batsman and bowlers looking in tremendous form it wouldn’t be surprising to watch us lifting the tournament trophy soon afterwords.

Zaheer Khan was named man of the match for picking up 3 crucial Sri Lankan wickets for just 38 runs off his 10 overs.
